Dr. Oliver Schultz
Paneldiscussion about: „art and dementia“

2025, September, 26, 7 pm

Uncertainty and foreignness arise. Certainties are lost. What one has known for a long time appears strange. One's own self also seems foreign. This is exhausting. Disconcerting. Very personal, very existential. Also societal. But it also has beautiful sides. Perhaps even unpredictable opportunities?

This attempt to describe dementia can also be read as a description of art. Mere coincidence? Or is there something that has always connected dementia with art - and vice versa? What do the two have in common? How does dementia appear through art? How does art appear through dementia?

Oliver Schultz has led the project 'Art and Encounter' for people with dementia in Wiesbaden and the surrounding area for many years. As a research associate at Justus Liebig University Giessen, he has conducted many research projects on dementia. In the Bellevue-Saal, he will show images of people with dementia, will tell about the artistic encounters in order to reflect together with you on the question: What could it be, the 'Art of Dementia'?

Oliver Schultz is co-editor of the magazine: demenz: das Magazin and has published a book on this subject: Oliver Schultz - Perspective Shift - The Art of Dementia, Frankfurt/Main 2017, Edition Faust.
