“belles vues” is the evocative and ambiguous title of the joint exhibition by Frankfurt-based artist Martin Brügger and Berlin-based artist Albert Weis at the Kunstverein Bellevue-Saal in Wiesbaden. For just as the exhibition’s title echoes the name of the institution, so too do the two artists replicate the wall structure of the exhibition space for their expansive installation. They reconstruct it as a raw drywall structure clad in gypsum board and fold it into a complex, labyrinthine structure. This creates spaces that are partly winding, diamond- and wedge-shaped, and leading into nothingness, cabinet-like spatial situations, but also blind spots and corridors that deliberately subvert conventional notions of art presentation.
The two artists developed the spatial installation as a collaborative, dialogic project, and as sculptors they respond to the architecture of the Bellevue Hall with a site-specific sculptural intervention. The built-in wall structure, which takes up the dimensions of the hall’s walls while simultaneously deconstructing them, in turn obstructs the “beautiful views” of the spacious hall.
Weis and Brügger also interpret the wall installation on a second level of meaning as a structure that serves as a support surface
or space for individually positioned sculptures, photographs, and works on paper by the two artists. The works on display explore the themes of folding, reflection, repetition, and simulation. They address the duality of image and representation, of artwork and everyday object, while also commenting on the motifs of the eponymous room installation. In this overall context, the traditional relationship between exhibition space and explicit art object shifts, thus inviting viewers to continually reposition themselves within the space and contextualize themselves within the new situation.
