WHAT IS THE PAINTING DOING AT THE BARN DOOR?!

Panel Discussion 09/02/2026  7 pm

A barn door as a canvas, a village setting as a venue for contemporary art – this observation forms the basis of the discussion organized by the Bellevue-Saal Art Association as part of its new discourse series. Under the title "What is the picture doing on the barn door?!", experts will discuss the social and aesthetic significance of art in unconventional locations.

The starting point is the planned intervention "Barn Door" by Wiesbaden artist Jutta Obenhuber, which will be realized in the Kloppenheim district in 2026. The work intervenes in an everyday environment and shifts the perception of space, function, and imagery. The panel will use this example as a springboard to discuss expanded forms of painting, the location as part of the artwork, and the relationship between art and public life.

Dr. Peter Forster (Landesmuseum Wiesbaden) will introduce art historical and theoretical contexts and reflect on how the concept of the image changes when art moves from the exhibition space into everyday life. Jutta Obenhuber explains her artistic practice and describes how her work attaches itself to existing structures and meanings. Moderated by Vivien Rathjen.

The panel discussion invites visitors to understand contemporary art not only as an object, but as a process of perception – as an opportunity to see familiar environments in a new light and to change one's perspective on the familiar.
